Tasting Notes

Blackberry ยท Brownie ยท Maple ยท Baking Spice

Crisp, clean, and sweet with mild acidity โ€” this is a natural-processed East African coffee that drinks with the clarity of a washed lot and the fruit-forward depth of its terroir.

The Story Behind the Cup

This lot comes from the Nkuba Coffee Washing Station, nestled in the highlands of Kayanza province in northern Burundi. Owned by Minani Leonard, the station processes cherry from 289 smallholder farmers who cultivate on its namesake hill. Nkuba means "lightning" in Kirundi โ€” and local tradition holds that this hill sits on soil blessed by lightning strikes.

The Butanyerera region is a newly formed mountainous highland bordering Rwanda to the north and Ngozi to the east. Bourbon cultivars grow on volcanic loam soils at altitude, and natural processing here remains rare in East Africa โ€” making these Burundi naturals a genuinely distinct category.

In the Cup

Expect notes of blackberry and bittersweet chocolate up front, with a lingering finish of maple and baking spice. Mild acidity, full sweetness, and a clean structure that rewards a slow pour.
